Growing from Seed

I'm a big fan of growing from seed. It's super satisfying to see a plant grow from a tiny seed, into a massive plant with lots to harvest. But it's only one option!

If you do decide to grow from seed, you need to decide if you plan to direct sow (place the seeds outdoors, directly in the place where you want them to grow), or whether you want to start them indoors and then transplant them outdoors at a later stage. There are pros and cons to each method, and some plants do better with one or the other method.

You might consider starting your fall seeds indoors for these reasons:

  • Greater control of temperature: fall seedlings can struggle in high heat, and will be prone to early bolting.
  • Greater control of moisture: seeds and seedlings can dry out quickly, especially on hot summer days.
  • Garden space is still full of summer vegetables.
  • Protection of vulnerable seedlings from birds and bugs.
